European Educational Research Quality Indicators (EERQI)
Project coordinator: Prof. Dr. Ingrid Gogolin

Upon initiative of the European Educational Research Association (EERA) and its members, the University of Hamburg, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ingrid Gogolin, has submitted a project proposal entitled European Educational Research Quality Indicators (EERQI) in the 7th Framework Programme of the Research Directorate of the European Union. EERQI has now been funded as a small collaborative project with ? 1,494,564 and will officially begin on 1st April 2008 for a three year period.
EERQI will build an advanced prototype framework for relevance assessment of research documents in educational research based on formal mechanisms including citation analysis and linking, semantically-based full text analysis and co-occurrence of information items in open access and non-open access repositories, as well as in journal articles, books and other freely-available scholarly publications. Educational research has been chosen as an example of socially- and politically embedded fields within the humanities and social sciences. The resulting prototype framework of quality indicators and methods will provide the base toolset for a European information service for evaluation of educational research publications and can be applied to other social sciences and humanities fields. Complementary to traditional measurements of scientific quality (citation analysis, journal impact factor), new methods and indicators of quality assessment will be tested (usage assessments, versions available, other statistical methods, as well as by means of advanced, semantics-based detection of linking, correlations and referral contexts).
The project will also address the complex role of the diversity of scientific languages in Europe. Different mother tongues are a barrier to the international flow of communication while also being fundamental to expressing complex scientific ideas which are often embedded in a certain cultural back-ground. Thus the project will also address the challenge of effectively dealing with multilingualism and specific ?cultural heritage? of research traditions in the European countries. EERQI results will also raise visibility and competitiveness of European researchers and contribute to new policy bases for funding, hiring, and evaluation decisions in European academic and research institutions.

The Project will be carried out by a Consortium of 19 European Institutions including 2 international and 2 national learned societies in educational research, as well as departments of education at European universities, computer and documentation centers, and publishers of educational research materials.
The Project website will be http://www.eerqi.eu and will be set up by the beginning of April.
All public documents from the project will be available in open access on this site.

Information regarding the Project can be obtained from:
Prof. Dr. Ingrid Gogolin (Gogolin@erzwiss.uni-hamburg.de)

Nasser Mansour, a research fellow who recently completed his PhD from the School of Education and Lifelong Learning at the University of Exeter has been awarded the European Educational Research Association (EERA) Best Paper Award for Postgraduate and Young Researchers.

This prestigious award is for his thesis ' Religious beliefs: A hidden variable in the performance of science teachers in the classroom'.

Nasser is Egyptian and lectured in Science Education in Egypt prior to moving to England for post graduate study. His winning paper focused on the challenges for Islamic cultures to manage the relationship between providing a religious and science education that may be at odds with each other.

The official award ceremony will take place in September in Göteborg, Sweden.

The European Research Council expands and delivers

The European Research Council consists of an autonomous Scientific Council of 22 scientists. The ERC is now prepared to award its first so-called starting grants, each of up to 2 million Euro over five years. To select the grantees the Council has established a panel structure of 20 panels of scientists covering physical, engineering, universe and earth sciences (8), biological and life sciences (7) and social and human sciences (5).

The Council and Parliament decision that put the FP7 in place proposed two executive agencies to help manage the 50 billion Euro budget. The ERC is now organising its administration by first establishing two new executive agencies in Brussels called the European Research Council Executive Agency and the Research Executive Agency. The first agency will be responsible for about 7 billion supporting frontier research, the other will have 6,5 billion to finance the Marie Curie fellowships, research for the benefit of SMEs and parts of the Space and Security themes.

Addis Ababa University
Ethiopia

13th to 15th May 2009

This is to give you early notice of a conference to take place in Addis Ababa in 2009 -- the first international educational research conference to be hosted in the country.  The organisers are very keen to extend an invitation to participants from European educational research associations and to build relationships with the European educational research community.

There is no more information available at this stage, but we shall distribute a call for papers in due course. Do plan ahead (it is only eighteen months away!) and keep this slot in your diaries.

Ethiopia is a wonderful country with an extraordinarily rich cultural heritage.  We shall be offering tourist packages linked to the conference for those who would like to take the opportunity to visit among other things  the source of the Blue Nile in Lake Tana and, the amazing rock churches of Lalibella (carved from the solid rock) or the archaeological remains of the ancient Axumite civilisation in Axum.

We look forward to seeing you in Addis!

Dean of the College of Education
